City-country River. Gustav Stettler in Dialogue with the Collection

Country idyll, urban romance, silence, pulsating everyday life and the flow between the two worlds of life. The exhibition examines the tension between rural origin and urban living space in Gustav Stettler's work. This is shown in the context of collection holdings, which also deal with urbanity and nature and invite visitors to reflect on their own.
Born in 1913 in the Bernese Oberdiessbach and died in Basel in 2005, Gustav Stettler was a city dweller characterized by a rural childhood and youth. Topics such as anonymity and interpersonal alienation ran through his work, but also the coming together of people, on the street, in galleries, in small and large groups. In contrast, Stettler created representations of nature and landscapes. The exhibition is created in cooperation with the Kunst Raum Riehen, where the artist from the 2nd September to 5. November 2023 as a portraitist of the city and its people was in the center.
