Jardin d’Hiver #1 , COMMENT PEUT-ON ÊTRE (DU VILLAGE D’À CÔTÉ) PERSAN (MARTIEN)?
group show
June 8 - September 12, 2021
A new platform for the region's contemporary art scene: the MCBA inaugurates Jardin d'Hiver, a biennial invitational exhibition. Curated by Jill Gasparina, art critic and independent curator, this exhibition embraces the principle of collage.
To the question "What is the contemporary Vaud scene?", the exhibition How can one be (from the village next door) Persian (Martian)? with its enigmatic title that flirts with science fiction, answers by addressing visitors∙euse∙s even more questions: how do several generations of artists dialogue together? How can different eras respond to each other? Does the physical and geographical environment exert an influence on the production of art? What role do independent art spaces play in the institutional ecosystem? What about museums and their collections? And how can we bring together artistic practices that have nothing in common other than the place from which they emerge?
As its title suggests, which articulates the near and the far, it is also the question of the relationship to a territory, its landscapes and its institutions, that lies at the heart of this exhibition. Instead of an exhaustive portrait of the Vaud scene, it is conceived in an organic and collective way, bringing together artists and art spaces that have themselves sometimes extended the invitation to others. Different proposals and scales coexist on the principle of collage, the only one capable of faithfully transcribing the great chaos that is an art scene, a strange phenomenon made up of exchanges and hospitality, friendships and rivalries, collectives and solitudes, tributes and alliances.
