Galerie Maria Bernheim presents a two-person exhibition with Mitchell Anderson (b. 1985, USA; lives and works in Zurich) and Ebecho Muslimova (b. 1984, Dagestan; lives and works in New York). The project, ‘Architecture + Romance + Illusion’, was developed by the artists for Material 2019 and explores common lines in their practices, that could be unnoticed if not shown side by side.
Anderson will exhibit new hand embroidered works continuing a series exploring concepts of unfinished projects.
Muslimova will exhibit new paintings and drawings, tracing her alter-ego Fatebe through a series of architectural renderings. Together the exhibition will explore the illusions of emotion and the constructions we and society create to both create them and hide them from ourselves and the world.
Zurich-based conceptual artist Mitchell Anderson uses text, embroidery, and found materials to explore disjointed or fabricated narratives from pop culture, literature, and history. In his series’ of playing card panels and hand-embroidered hangings Anderson replicates and codes literature, poetry and news reports to examine the slippage that occurs when text is mediated. In these pieces text is embroidered in mirrored form so that it is abstracted when Anderson exhibits what is normally the reverse and a code using playing cards for sharing messages in totalitarian environments is harnessed to hide content and create dada-esque compositions of chance. Anderson’s work has been included in group and solo shows internationally, including Fri-Art Kunsthalle Fribourg, CH; MAMCO, Geneva; Galerie Maria Bernheim, Zurich; Galerie Max Mayer, Dusseldorf.
